Make Your Website Work For You
It’s been said so often that it has now become a cliché – the world is online / we are in the digital age / the information era is here… While there are many businesses that still don’t have websites to take advantage of this powerful truth, many companies with websites aren’t doing it properly. The question is, “what makes a good website?”
- Clean, brand-aligned design aesthetics
Just like print ads, signage and any other form of marketing, your website needs to be captivating. People tend to be weary of websites that don’t look professional and modern. You should also keep in mind that your website is not an independent element and needs to tie in with the aesthetics of all your other brand collateral in order to foster trust with your visitors. An old fashioned website that looks nothing like the rest of your brand elements will send visitors away – not a good thing.
- Spelling, grammar and proper language
In many cases where business owners build their own websites and write the content themselves, the websites may be filled with spelling and grammatical errors. Again, this looks bad in the eyes of your visitors, who are your potential clients. This is why it’s important to have a copywriter in your team. Before writing anything though, decide what your voice will be – some grammar ‘rules’ are nothing more than archaic misconceptions and can be thrown away if you’re planning on a more casual approach, e.g. not starting sentences with conjunctions. Note: Being in South Africa, we use Queen’s English, meaning you should steer clear of American spelling.
- SEO
If you’ve ever had anything to do with websites, you possibly know about SEO, but what is it? In basic terms, SEO (search engine optimisation) refers to the creation of a website in a way that is search engine friendly. It can often be tricky, so a professional digital marketer or website developer is a good person to have in your corner. Remember – write for people first, then search engines.
- User experience
While this ties in to the design of your website, it is important to note that your website needs to be user-friendly. We’re hesitant to call Internet users lazy, but it’s important to know that they want to access the necessary information quickly and in as little clicks as possible. Say they want to know about a certain service you offer, they should be able to get there straight from your home page. Perhaps they want to contact you, they should be able to see your details or go to your contact page from every page. With that being said, it is a good idea to have a contact form on your website so your potential customers don’t have to go and phone or email you, but can get in touch straight on your website.
